Abandoned Angels Cocker Spaniel Rescue of New York held their first cocktail party fundraiser last month in Manhattan raising $25,000. Donations came from cocker lovers and corporate sponsors through ticket sales and silent auction. Attendees were treated with a live performance from Grammy Award winner Roberta Flack singing “Killing Me Softly With His Song.” One guest was lucky enough to win private singing lessons from Flack herself through the silent auction.

Abandoned Angels will use the proceeds to pay for veterinary treatment needed for the many cockers in their care. “We have a lot of dogs in our rescue that are waiting for medical treatments and surgeries, so we truly appreciate any help the public may offer,” said Madeline Elghanayan, co-chair of NY Abandoned Angels Rescue. Dolores Rodrigues, rescue founder, was pleased with the event turnout. Rodrigues continues to raise awareness of cocker spaniels in need–the breed she loves so much.

Texas cocker spaniel club member convicted

Sixty-one-year-old Betty McClendon, owner of B-Mac’s Kennels, member of Cocker Spaniel Club of South Texas, Secretary of Cocker Spaniel Club of Austin and Secretary of Cocker Spaniel Club of San Antonio, was convicted of 32 counts of animal cruelty (a misdemeanor in Texas). Her sentence of one year of jail was waived because of her age and clean record. Instead she will serve 15 days in jail and two years probation. As part of her probation she cannot own any animals or participate in animal-related clubs. She must also reimburse the SPCA for veterinary treatment provided to her cocker spaniels.

On May 29, 2009, deputy Bill Jenkins responded to an animal abuse complaint at Betty McClendon’s residence in Rosenberg, Texas. Thirty-two cocker spaniels were found in a hot shed stacked in cages. All were severely neglected some with maggots. One dog did not survive the ordeal. The animals were taken into custody by the SPCA.

Abandoned Angels rescue to hold fundraiser

abandoned angels logoAbandoned Angels Cocker Spaniel Rescue of New York will hold a charity event on May 17, 2011 between 6 – 9 p.m. This will be their first annual cocktail party fundraiser. The event includes music, wine tasting and hors d’oeuvres. Attendees will receive goodie bags and the opportunity to participate in a silent auction for items donated by local merchants. Several cocker spaniels available for adoption will present at the event. The event will be held on the fabulous rooftop of 505 West 37th Street in Manhattan. Tickets cost $75 – 100.

Dolores Rodrigues founded Abandoned Angels Cocker Spaniel Rescue because of her love of the breed especially her first cocker spaniel named Rudy. “Rudy was the start of it all, the reason I love this breed so much and always will.” says Mrs. Rodrigues. “Our hope is that dog lovers from across the tri-state area will come to our fundraiser to support our rescue so that we can continue to save the countless other dogs that need our help.” says Mrs. Rodrigues.

Adopted cocker spaniel saves family

Oscar, a buff six-year-old cocker spaniel, woke his family up early Monday morning after flames engulfed the front of their New Jersey home. “If he didn’t come and scratch on the door, I wouldn’t have got out of bed,” said Laurie Esarco. Laurie and her husband were able to wake their children and get them to safety. The family is grateful to Oscar whom they adopted from a shelter. “He saved our lives. He’s a rescue dog that we rescued, and he turned around and rescued us,” Alex Esarco said.

Cocker spaniels with special needs

Cocker Spaniel Rescue of New England (CSRNE) has some very special cocker spaniels. They have medical conditions that require special care. This makes adoption to loving homes difficult for them as they are passed over by younger, healthier cockers. Penny, a buff cocker spaniel, was found tied to a lamp post at a Lowes store. Unfortunately, she has Cushing’s disease causing her to have urinary incontinence. “Cushing’s dogs drink enormous amounts of water and pee a lot,” says June Quintin, a volunteer for CSRNE. “I would say I change her diaper two or three times a day.”

There’s also a buff cocker spaniel named Bam Bam who has myasthenia gravis–a disease that causes muscle weakness. Bam Bam has to be fed upright instead of eating with his head down in a bowl to prevent him from choking. It takes veterinary staff about twenty-five minutes each day to feed him. CSRNE has invested about $5,000 caring for these dogs in efforts to place them in loving homes. If you are interested in adoption or would like to donate please call (603) 547-3363.
