Bath Time

I just bathed Hoshi. I wanted to wait till later because it’s raining outside. He really hasn’t been scratching obsessively but I found one flea on him. Also, his skin is red and scaly by his belly. That’s were I found the flea. I didn’t give him a trim this time except for the inside of his ears. I did find some dark sores on his ears, chest and belly. I’m thinking they are from the fleas. I’ll keep and eye on them.

I’m getting really good and skinning chicken and sharpening our knives. Of course, I’m getting lots of practice. Hoshi is doing well on his raw diet. His stools are better overall then they were on his kibble diet. He’s still getting kibble in between his chicken thighs. It’s hard to tell but I think he’s gaining weight. Maybe more muscular too. I’m running to the store right now to buy some more chicken. I have some at home but it’s not unthawed yet.

Raw Diet: Week 3

Things have been going okay so far. I still feed him chicken thighs but without the skin and fat. There were several mornings when Hoshi was throwing up bile. I’m not sure why but I suspect it was the fatty skin. I’m not very handy in the kitchen but I’ve learned how to remove the skin and fat pretty well. They do sell skinless thighs in the grocery store but they’re a $1.00 more and don’t looked completely skinned to me. So far, Hoshi hasn’t thrown up with the skinless thighs.

I still hand feed him. Do any of you give whole portions like I’m doing? He’s gotten pretty good at pulling the meat off the bone. He also likes the bone now too. I did try drumsticks but stopped because there seemed to be more sharp pieces of bone. It also had more gristle and Hoshi’s poops were too soft. Overall, Hoshi’s poops are slightly firmer. I will mention, I am still giving him kibble. That may be affecting his stool.

I give Hoshi about two meals day (one thigh per meal). Sometimes if he’s really hungry he’ll eat two thighs. I have noticed some improvements in his appearance. His nose looks wetter. Before it was looking dry. Gabby had the same problem. Gabby’s nose was dry and scaly–maybe that was due to diet. Hoshi’s eye’s also have more of a twinkle. He’s eye’s must be moister. Hoshi’s breath is also better. It must be because of the bones. To be honest, I haven’t been brushing his teeth like I should.

Hoshi having fits at pet store

Hoshi knows there’s free treats at the cash register of Petsmart. He barks and begs quite loudly. He stands on his hind legs and leans over the checkout trying to get the cashier’s attention. It sort of cute and embarrassing at the same time.

Hoshi surprised me!

Squirrel
Squirrel
We were taking our walk this morning and as usual Hoshi was scavenging for anything he could eat. It was 6:00am and still dark. Just minutes into our walk Hoshi picked up something that looked like a bone. Later he stopped and picked up something else. He stood there for awhile with it in his mouth then he set it back down. IT HAD EARS AND A POINTY NOSE! It was a baby squirrel! It seemed to be sick because it was barely moving. We left it there and headed home. That squirrel would have been history if it had been Gabby that found it.

Hoshi’s 1st raw meal

Let’s see how he does. I bought some frozen chicken thighs. After it was pretty much unthawed I gave it to him. He gave it a few licks then looked at me and said, “this is raw!” I had to hand feed it to him. He seemed to like the meat better than the skin. The meat was softer than the chewy skin. He gave up after a while and barked at it! He does that sometimes with his treats. I got him to eat the rest 10 minutes later. Believe it or not, he wouldn’t eat the bone. Normally, he’ll snatch up chicken bones we find on our walks and eat them.
