I finally walked Hoshi!

I haven’t walked Hoshi since August. This morning my foot wasn’t feeling too bad so I walked Hoshi to the corner–not far but better than nothing. I’ll try to walk him every day now.

Greeting police with your dog

Police Officer - SmilesJust about every day I read on Google how a family pet has been shot by police. The usual scenario is police are responding to a call at someone’s home. The dog is seen as a threat then shot. The first thing I would do is secure your dog as soon as possible when you know police are coming. You may think your dog is friendly and not a threat but the officer responding may not feel that way. It doesn’t matter how friendly your dog is if they suddenly jump at the officer from out of nowhere. If you are unable to secure your dog please let the officer know your have a dog(s)–at least they won’t be caught off guard. Act as calm as possible with addressing the officer. If you’re excited or anxious both your dog and the officer may become excited as well–you want to prevent that as much as possible. Take an obedience class if you haven’t already. If you demonstrate control over your dog a confrontation will be less likely.

Your pet may encounter police elsewhere. Many times dogs are shot when loose outside. It’s your responsibility to restrain your dog at all times. Also, secure your pet when traveling by automobile. Your police encounter will go much smoother and you’ll prevent your pet from escaping if the doors are open. Please feel free to add your suggestions.

Animal research lab closed down

How would you feel if you knew a laboratory used by the makers of Frontline was shut down because of abuse? That’s exactly what happened. Professional Laboratory and Research Services (PLRS) located in North Carolina was shut down after video of workers abusing animals became public. Bayer (advantix), Merial (Frontline), Sergeant’s and other companies used this lab to test their products. A black cocker spaniel named Sammy was among the 200 rescued from PLRS. Wake County’s ASPCA is providing Sammy and others medical care. They can tell he’s been traumatized as he cowers in fear from them.

Contact the SPCA of Wake County if you are interested in Sammy or the others.

Edit: The Triangle Beagle Rescue of NC also took 35 beagles which are available for adoption.

Hoshi’s enemy

Big Boy
Big Boy
I won’t be walking for a while but I wanted to tell you about someone who Hoshi is very afraid of. The Big Boy! There’s a restaurant near my house called Big Boy. Every time we walk by Hoshi goes bonkers and warns me about the dangerous big boy by barking his head off. Even after we pass by Hoshi keeps looking back to make sure he’s not following us.

Neighbor told us to leave

I was walking Hoshi before I left for work. Hoshi was doing #2 on my neighbor’s grass. The neighbor opened his window and said, “Excuse me! What are you doing!?” I held up my grocery bag and said, “I’ll pick it up.” I said it as friendly as I could. He said, “Never mind. Get going. ” Well, I picked it up and left. We’ve lived here 13 years and this was our 1st encounter. I think he moved in his parents’ house during that time.
