Queens, NY woman beaten for cocker spaniel

On June 28th around 10pm, Lora Panossian was walking her 5 year-old cocker spaniel Ginger in Chrocheron Park. Two men approached Panossian taking interest in Ginger. “They were friendly…asking questions about my dog, so I didn’t think anything of it.” While one man petted Ginger the other “sucker” punched Panossian in the stomach. She collapsed from the blow while the two men made off with Ginger.

Sadly, Ginger’s body was discovered two days later in a pond. Panossian felt traumatized by the incident and was unable to work. “It’s a safe area. I’m completely blown away that this happened,” she said.

Eleven-year-old kills spaniel puppy

An 11-year-old girl in upstate New York was charged with criminal mischief and aggravated cruelty to animals. Both felony charges will be handled by the Warren County Family Court due to her age. Last Sunday the girl stayed overnight at a foster home on Lake George. When the girl’s request for a ride was denied she picked up a 13-week-old Cavalier King Charles spaniel and beat it to death against the floor and bed post. During an interview with YNN news, Cathy Cloutier, executive director of the SPCA of Upstate New York said it was rare for someone that young to act so violently. “We can’t lose fact that this child really needs some major, serious help before other victims are in her line,” said Cloutier.

Cocker spaniel mascot of Ft. Ontario, NY

General Jacob Brown is an eight-year-old cocker spaniel in charge of greeting guests at historical Fort Ontario in Oswego, New York. He’s often seen in various military uniforms and participates in historical re-enactments. Most of his uniforms were made by Jennifer Emmons, Fort Ontario’s Curatorial Assistant, for his role as fort mascot. Some of the uniforms include:

Revolutionary War
War of 1812
Civil War
World War I

General Brown’s other duties include chasing off woodchucks and picture posing. When he’s not on duty he’ll join you for lunch at picnics or at the snack bar.

Abandoned Angels rescue raises $25,000

Abandoned Angels Cocker Spaniel Rescue of New York held their first cocktail party fundraiser last month in Manhattan raising $25,000. Donations came from cocker lovers and corporate sponsors through ticket sales and silent auction. Attendees were treated with a live performance from Grammy Award winner Roberta Flack singing “Killing Me Softly With His Song.” One guest was lucky enough to win private singing lessons from Flack herself through the silent auction.

Abandoned Angels will use the proceeds to pay for veterinary treatment needed for the many cockers in their care. “We have a lot of dogs in our rescue that are waiting for medical treatments and surgeries, so we truly appreciate any help the public may offer,” said Madeline Elghanayan, co-chair of NY Abandoned Angels Rescue. Dolores Rodrigues, rescue founder, was pleased with the event turnout. Rodrigues continues to raise awareness of cocker spaniels in need–the breed she loves so much.

Abandoned Angels rescue to hold fundraiser

Abandoned Angels Cocker Spaniel Rescue of New York will hold a charity event on May 17, 2011 between 6 – 9 p.m. This will be their first annual cocktail party fundraiser. The event includes music, wine tasting and hors d’oeuvres. Attendees will receive goodie bags and the opportunity to participate in a silent auction for items donated by local merchants. Several cocker spaniels available for adoption will present at the event. The event will be held on the fabulous rooftop of 505 West 37th Street in Manhattan. Tickets cost $75 – 100.

Dolores Rodrigues founded Abandoned Angels Cocker Spaniel Rescue because of her love of the breed especially her first cocker spaniel named Rudy. “Rudy was the start of it all, the reason I love this breed so much and always will.” says Mrs. Rodrigues. “Our hope is that dog lovers from across the tri-state area will come to our fundraiser to support our rescue so that we can continue to save the countless other dogs that need our help.” says Mrs. Rodrigues.
