DNA testing for breeders

In another post a member was inquiring about a puppy with merle traits which is unnatural in American cocker spaniels. Karen suggested a responsible breeder may provide OFA certification. I'm not sure what that entails. I'm guessing it's a form that's completed by the primary vet and submitted to the OFA. But I see the OFA also provides DNA testing for genetic disorders.

DNA testing is available everywhere now. I ordered one for myself and Hoshi from Amazon. I believe a sire and dam should have mandatory DNA testing before breeding. It could prevent puppies with genetic disorders being born. I'm not sure if the OFA requires DNA testing but it would be great if they did.

OFA shows that the dog doesn’t have hip dysplasia. These rays, performed under seditionare sent to the orthopedic foundation and are read by three qualified Vetinary specialists. The dog has to be at least two years old before they can be tested. This isn’t a guarantee of course but it does lessen the chances of dysplasia.

As for DNA testing, I’m not sure. It isn’t currently required. I’ll bet it would be expensive for the breeders. I think some people are really interested in it for themselves and others aren’t.

If the DNA testing could help breeders eliminate some of the problems like seizures and even maybe some cancers, I'm all for it. I would rather pay a little more for a pup then the heartache of putting it down and a younger age. As it becomes more prevalent, it might be good if AKC required it.

Thanks for the info Karen. It's good hearing the OFA reads the xrays themselves.
