excessive shedding

I just noticed clumps of hair falling off Hoshi. He usually doesn't shed like this and I just bathed and groomed him a few days ago. Am I missing something?

That’s a lot of hair for a cocker. Salmon oil maybe, is he missing something in his diet, or maybe allergic to something. Had he had blood work done lately?

Is Hoshi maybe blowing coat and getting ready for winter? It seems to be quite a bit of fur but there also have been a lot of changes in his life lately. Also how is his thyroid? If this loss continues you might want to get that checked.

I'm not sure if his thyroid was checked last visit but I'll ask. Thanks.

Manuel I thought of thyroid also. My suggestion would be to do a full panel, it is more expensive and only a few places run full panel. My vet sends it to Michigan State. dr Jean Dodds also does it. Chase thyroid at the vets, the one that shows T4 showed Chase as normal. I insisted on the full panel and sure enough Chases free T3 and some other things not on the panels vets send to regular labs was low. He is on thyroid meds.

Now that is interesting.....not a full panel u say? How much more expensive? Twice the cost or only a bit more?

You are right: Something has changed about your dog. It might not be anything too terrible. Could he be having a reaction to the flea prevention you are using by any chance?

Wow great idea Mel, although I have been using it on my Pye and occasionally on Pogo and their coats are okay. And, I do add just a tad more lemon grass oil in mine because I like the fresh scent.

I'm mostly spraying his legs. most of this hair came from his back. It's better now. Maybe the number of baths I've given him. Haven't spoke to the vet yet but plan to.

Well it's probably not the flea prep then. I noticed when Fi came home from the vet this last time, her belly normally a soft pink, was a much darker pink....a sign of inflammation......maybe from the anesthetic....? It would be SO much easier if they could talk!!

The cost depends on the vets charge for the service, shipping etc. I get the most comprehensive one and it is about $250 but it is the only way I can do it, even now 10 yrs later the best one the vet does shows him as normal, and he’s not. My vet gets a report from the specialist that does the test also. Not all vets will send it out to Michigan and even less to Dr Dodds.

These tests vary wildly from vet to vet for tests. I know when I asked the members of this forum about titers tests for immunity for the combo vaccination dogs routinely receive, some people reported that their vet service charges in excess of $100 per disease immunization. My vet charges only $88 for all of them. What really stunned me is that my vet told me that I am only one of 2 people who pursue a course of "only when necessary" vaccination.....and it is a huge practice. Be sure that I will be asking about the differences between these 2 panels the next time we are there.

Manuel....how is Hoshi doing with this shedding thing? Did it abate?

Hoshi's shedding seems to be normal again. We had a flea problem and maybe that caused it. The fleas didn't like the apple cider vinegar and went after me too. Fleas are almost gone. I'm going to treat the lawn next year and hopefully avoid this again. I've been home sick with the flu but getting better.
