Good day everybody:),

I am new here and really need help with my Lola. She is 4 month old American Cocker and she is supper smart, but …..she eats her poop:x .We tried special pills to make her poop taste bad ( I was sure that it’s bad enough without the pill), she had a lot of gas and , yes, still like the taste. We sprinkled hot sauce on it, she is still eating it (just spends more time to find “clean” peace). How to stop that madness?

Thank you.
Iryna.

First off I want to say Welcome ^_^

About your Lola eating poop.. it happens. Perhaps there is something lacking in her diet? Sometimes they go for it just because.. I have my Petunia. She was a back yard breeder's brood bitch. She was undernurished. What we do is make sure that we clean up after all the dogs right away. If there is none on the ground they won't eat it..:p

Welcome Lola!

For future reference "heeelp!" topics go in the Advice section. I found a nice article on this topic on FamilyFun: Why Dogs Eat Poop - and More Great Family Fun Party Ideas. Seriously, that article is written by Dr. Peter Kross, DVM. He states puppies have this problem (we think it is anyways) if their food is incompletely digested. He recommends adding enzyme supplements such as papaya extract to maximize your pet's digestion. Of course, he recommends other common remedies such as adding hot sauce on your dog's droppings to give them an unpleasant experience. I have a feeling she'll outgrow her problem. In the meantime, cleaning up her droppings will definitely help--it will make your backyard safer to walk in too. :naughty:

My Gabby prefers cat poop. Unfortunately, our neighbor's cat uses our front yard as a bathroom thus providing Gabby an unlimited supply of delicious snacks. Our vet recommends keeping Gabby on HeartGuard Plus year around in case he comes into contact with any parasites in his "snacks."

yep, gotta pick it up, hot off the press so to speak, and adding something like prozyme will help.

Also, some dogs need more protein in their diets. What is she eating? well, besides a pile of crap that is. hahaha

I've read that feeding Pineapple helps. Might work better than the pills?

Deborah
I don't think anything helps if they have their mind on it but picking it up asap.

I agree - the best bet is picking it up. I tried everything - pills, powder, pineapple, tabasco, etc. Nothing worked except picking it up.

I taught a leave it command and pick it up immediately...but did use deter with some success acouple of years ago..little miss Zoe' refused to eat her food with this on it so gave it up. Tryed the pineapple too, but again Zoe would refuse her food witht that on it.

OK hit the post button to soon...the leave it command only works if you see them going for it. I was told by a trainer that it the leave it command is used constantley then they will learn to leave it always...hmmmmm ever see a dog look around to see if they see you and then do whatever they were going to do anyway when they thought the coast was clear???? Yeah that would be Maggie.

EDIT: Manuel: Good advice. You can always edit your post if you forget something.

My Scout has always had issues with eating poo and a i just try to clena the yard more often in the descent weather not much to be done in the winter when frozen and my Charlierose perfers her poo frozen dont ask me why but that is my CharlieRose.
I have tried using Accent ( a spice) but that contians MSG and tried some pills from petco and nothing seems work for mine. I just dont accept kisses from my boy and not from Charlie in the winter.

I'd stear clear of Deter and accent. There have been studies shown that MSG can cause seizures in dogs taking that.

Just go out with the dog and clean it up
