Cocker ear help..

I gave my cocker spaniel puppy a bath last night, and read online that you should tie their ears back after bathing to avoid ear infections. I tied them back with a hair elastic, and let her downstairs to visit with my fiance. He put her to bed that night. He didn't realize that, while her ears were laying flat as usual, the band was still attached to her ear, hidden under her fur. I woke up this morning, went downstairs to greet her, and was horrified to find the hair elastic still wrapped around one ear. I removed it immediately, and it has swelled considerably since. What should I do?
I can't stop crying. I feel like such a horrible owner. Please help, I don't know if I should take her to the vet..

Hello, I would take her to the vet and have her checked out asap..

Yes, go to the vet. You may have had the elastic on to tightly and it may need drained. It's really not necessary to do that from now on. Just be careful about spraying water directly into the ear or put some cotton inside.

Thank you very much for the advice. There are no veterinary clinics open during the weekend. Do you think she will be okay until Monday, or should I call in as an emergency?

You should call a 24 hour vet. Look one up in your phone book even one that is not in your area.

Thank you again for the advice. I'm so embarrassed to have brought this upon my baby. Thankfully, it doesn't seem to be bothering her too much. We looked around a bit, and found a nearby clinic that is open on Saturdays. We will be taking her in tomorrow morning. :)

Let us know how it goes.
And don't be embarrassed, at least you asked for help instead of ignoring the situation. Good job.

Great Ashley that's wonderful. BTW I forgot to introduce myself! I'm Polly and I live with my hubby Michael in the Angeles National Forest above Los Angeles in California. We are empty nesters and our "children" are our 3 cocker boys, Pogo our buff rescue who has been with us 7.5 years, Pepper our black and tan old man who we have had for 10 wonderful years, and Stormy our Retired show boy who Robin trusted us with 3.5 years ago, he's going to be nine in 2 weeks, oh and he's a brown.

I too own a Cocker Spaniel 12years old. He loves the Ocean but I used to limit his visits to the beach because it takes for every for his ears to dry and the blow dryer freaks him out. I tried every thing to tie his ears back but nothing worked. Until we found this Doggie Ear Rubber Bands made for long ear dogs cuz the Human ones don't work. It straps on to their collar so it goes everywhere he goes. He loves it and seems unfaced by it.

Looks interesting and safer than actual rubber bands.

I cut the ends off an old sock and use it as a makeshift snood after putting cotton balls in their ears.

Bad things happen, so do accidents. Just take a deep breath.

I don't know I've always found that a good towel drying and then walking them along the shore dried out their ears most satisfactorily.

What happend with the Cocker Spaniels ear? I did the same thing with a hair tie to let my dogs ears air out and now her ears are very swollen. What did the vet say or do?

I personally do not recommend binding your dog's ears. Towel drying should work fine. Any time your not sure about something ask your vet first.

Her ears are most likely swollen because you put the hair tie on too tight. Hopefully you didn't 'kill' the swollen tissue. I suggest you take Taffie to the vet if the swelling has not come down to normal ASAP.
