That's horrible. I'm not fond of German shepherds after being bit by one but wouldn't wish that for any dog. I hope they don't get another one unless they plan on properly socializing him. It's painfully obvious living in a remote area is no excuse.
I don't know them that well, but I do know he tried. He took him to puppy kindergarten and said all the dog wanted to do was bark at the other puppies. So, I think it was more in the dog itself than lack of training. He has another dog, a golden retriever and that dog is a very nice dog. I'm not in the least afraid of it.
