Coco's Eye

He finally let me hold him last night and I got a chance to look at his eye. I have never seen anything like this but I've only ever had one dog with cherry eye so I am placing my trust in my e-friends again for advice. The eye itself looks swollen but is not hard to the touch like the eye with Glaucoma. He also has the third eye thing going on but not in the inside corner like Mendi did. On the outer corner of his bottom lid. At near 14.5 years old and blind I'm not rushing to the vet with him besides him being not at all a very friendly kinda pateint. Doesn't seem to hurt him but I'm thinking he might've run into something. Cold compresses and antibiotic eye meds perhaps?

Any way you could get a picture? I'm kind of stumped by the description . . .

Sharon..
It's like that with my Petunia.. she is completely blind but her eyes don't hurt her. So I won't have them taken out at her age.. we "rescued" her for Cockers In Need in 2003, my vet said then she was around 10.. so why operate on her now at her age unless she is in pain..

Well, you don't have to rush him to the vet although I think the vet would give you the best diagnosis of the problem. Like everyone else, I'm not sure what's going on. If the eyeball itself is bulging outward, that sounds serious. If there's redness, swollen membranes, and discharge that sounds like an irritation or infection. If you have antibiotic eye drops already you could give that a try first.

Glaucoma usually ends up in both eyes. There doesn't need to be a hardness or swelling it's the fluid pressure that needs to be check as that is painful. It doesn't sound like cherry eye to me but I would need a picture to see what you mean. If he's hurting he could be closing eye and the 3rd eyelid coming up as a way to protect the eye. Are you using any timolol in that eye as a precaution?

At the very least I would have the pressure checked.

Thanks - I'll try to get a pic today. (Gots to get more batteries for my camera.) It actually went down yesterday to what's normal for him. I have some anti-b's for the eye I bought by mistake so I've been using that twice a day. Don't know what Timolol is. I'll put some Trusopt in this morning and see how that does. He's not bothering the eye at all. Just looks bad. :(

Update

Poor guy's eye has gotten so bad so fast I have to make a decision soon. It's definitely Glaucoma come into that eye but I think there's more to it as there's swelling behind the eye too like a tumor pushing it out. Vet agrees although he's not an eye doctor. I'm putting in Trusopt 4 times per day and anti-b's twice per day as well as cold compresses whenever but this is moving too fast. I know I can have the eye killed but he wouldn't survive the surgery and that wouldn't help whatever's going on behind the eye. Holding out and helping him hang in until after the holidays. He needs to go find his Daddy I think. At least I gave him 1.5 years of a warm bed and two squares per day and love...all of which he was sadly missing when he lost his Daddy.

I'm so sorry Coco's eye is worse. Is the eye his worst health problem right now? I know he's 14 yrs old. I would ask your vet his honest appraisal for surgery.

It's not really a surgery. They just inject something into the eye that kills the fluid making part of the eye that is causing the pressure and pain.

The eye sort of dries up and they also do this orally too, with glycerine.

They are out for a short time and kept still for a bit.

Poor you having to make a decision.

Oh - I would so go for this. The oral one for sure. I don't want to let him go if I don't have to. I think so long as he's eating and loving he deserves a chance but I don't want him to be in pain. I will call Dr. Woolf (eye doctor) next week and see if he can give him that option. He's not pawing at his eye this morning so I must be doing something right.

I'm glad he's doing better this morning. Hoping for good news with his eye doctor. :prayer:

Sharon I'm so sorry he took a turn for the worse but am glad he is a bit better now. If you need a second opinion let me know and I will call my friend and get the name of her eye doctor in Tampa. I know he worked wonders on her pup.

I think Dr. Woolf is the only doggy eye doctor in Tampa. I'm gonna give Carol a call and see if she can help Coco out. So long as he is not in pain I'm not letting him go. He eats well and still comes for cuddles and swapping spit. :naughty: If I have to put drops in every hour I'll find a way to afford it. Crazy as it sounds I love this cranky old dude - tumors and bad attitude included!

Ok - $300 to kill the eye and that's rescue's charge. Ouch. No one's heard of the glycerine thing but "we" are researching. I now have an outlet for more Trusopt...free to me...yay! Monte will be having his booster shots for cost and heartworm tabs at cost also. And I will be doing a LOT more for rescue in exchange! Oh well - it gets pretty boring around here anyway.

I would like to help if possible. If you have a Paypal, I could send you something. Maybe I could send something to your rescue?

Would like to help to, if possible. Poor old guy. Thoughts and prayers going out to Coco.

You guys are very sweet to offer to help. I don't know yet what we're going to do as I told rescue I would much prefer not putting the guy under so the oral thingy is my hope. No clue if it's available here or what the cost is so no idea yet what's going to happen. Will keep you posted!

Sharon, I tried calling my friend Tia and I think they are out of town. I will try calling her cell phone later today and will let you know if I find out anything that may help you.

Sharon,

the oral glycerin is something my vet had me do with Rags. We had to keep the pressure down. Now, it's also something that should be done per vet instructions... as it can cause rebound issues. The eye specialists also have something like that, IV Mannitol, but with Rags we tossed the kitchen sink at him in the beginning. His was so bad we HAD to relieve the pressure immediately and keep it down for a bit.

Eventually we did take the eye, but he needed to be healthy and more stable before that surgery, because we did a neuter and a hernia repair at same time. It eventually went to the other eye and Nancy had that eye removed.

If you look up Glaucoma and Glycerin - you might find some info, but I don't advise you doing it yourself, without your vets knowledge. My vet has taught me so much because he knows me and that rescue knows the red flags and sometimes we treat the smaller things ourselves, so he keeps me pretty well stocked up on some meds, etc that should be in our hands if need be.

I have also learned several things from a rescue I used to foster for. We are not vets and can't play vets on TV, but we can certainly learn from our vets and other rescues that have had good success with certain protocols.

Sometimes a vet and an eye specialist have different opinions on things. Vet knows the eye will go eventually, and that we can't afford to mess around, specialist wants to save it if possible. So, most times rescue realizes that the pups don't need the eye and have it either killed or removed, depends on funds and whats best for dog and getting them pain free and adopted without more issues down the road.

Of course doing your research is important, but also, discuss with vet.
