Coco's Eye

Sharon, I finally got in touch with Tia. Give these folks a call and see if they can help you. Don't know if they offer any discount for rescue or not but it is worth a try.

Florida Veterinary Specialists
3000 Busch Lake Blvd. (I think Tia said it is near Florida Ave)

The doc Tia sees with her pups is Michele Stengard. She replaced the doc that did the surgery on Tia's dog as that vet went back to teach at UF. Tia speaks very highly of this institution and I personally would not hesitate to follow her recommendation.

Tia wishes you the best of luck - and so do I. Let me know if I can help.

You don't need an eye specialist to remove the eye. Most vets have experience in enuculations... and are much cheaper. Same with the shot to kill it.

However, that said - you gotta do what you feel best.

Our vet does it all, unless he feels a specialist is needed to SAVE the eye, or if you were to do lens replacements, like we did with Peaches.

Personally, my feeling with Glaucoma is, you can't save it.

My vet wouldn't be able to do either I'm sure. He's just basically a shots and tags guy so far as I've seen. Florida Vet Specialists are HUGELY expensive and I don't think Carol gets a discount with them. She's had a few dogs in there in the past when her normal vet wasn't available. She takes dogs up to Gainesville all the time for these issues. I'm hoping she can take him one trip.

No FM - I won't try the glycerin on my own. I'm a scaredy-cat when it comes to side-effects. Carol keeps telling me she'll teach me to Ivermec instead of heartguard but I've heard a few harrowing stories of what can happen if you mess up...not for me! I couldn't live with myself if I killed a pooch cause of my own stupidity.

On a brighter note, he's not pawing at the eye anymore except first thing in the morning. It looks horrible but if he's not in pain I don't care how it looks
.

Oh I've used Ivo on many occasions, especially for mange

but it's the same stuff in the Heartguard.

The only thing with Ivo is it can't be used on "collie" type dogs... rule of thumb is, 4 white feet, don't treat. They have bad reactions to it. So for heartworm prevention, they use something else that doesn't have Ivomectin in it. We use Interceptor.

Ok, so the thing is, you need a normal vet.

PS -- several of the dogs we had with Glaucoma never pawed at eye.

There could be a combination of problems here including dry eye.

He's getting Puralube and triple B also. It's looking a lot better today although not back to "normal". I see the pawing as an indication it hurts him which is something I want to avoid. So far, the options don't look all that good. A $300 needle to kill the eye (which may not work) doesn't sound very good to me. We'll see what rescue comes up with this week and go from there.

Haven't heard anything yet but this is the time of year when Dr. Woolf may be out of town even. Despite being told his eye might have stretched out too much to go back down with the Trusopt, it does look like it's going down. I think it's under control now so hoping we may not have to resort to extraordinary methods. So long as he's not in pain kinda thing.

Stretched out?

Main thing is it causing detached retinas. Well, that and the fluid build up
