I saw on Google a man slamming his girlfriend's cocker spaniel puppy on the ground. Most people don't think of domestic violence involving pets but it happens. A dog person I know was telling me she was afraid her husband might hurt her dog. It's a toy breed and she's very fond of it.
In situations like this I know it's easy to say "just leave them" but I realize it might be complicated with living arrangements, possessions, children. At the very least the victim should realize they're living in an unsafe situation.
