what age should teeth be cleaned?

I gave my dogs a rawhide this morning and noticed my girl Charlierose was bleeding on her bone. She is only 6 (today is her b-day) is that too young for a teeth cleaning or should she have her teeth cleaned before. She has had some blood on her rawhide bones before but todays bone is the worst. She is otherwise healthy and happy.

oh it depends on so many factors.. genetics plays in to teeth too.

But the vet would tell you if your dog needs a dental. Bleeding is from gums, gingivitis -- and while I don't normally give rawhides, it helps to massage gums and help to remove tartar that might be up at gumline.

Some dogs need a dental yearly. Do you brush her teeth?
 
My Pogo was 5 this year and still didn't need a dental. My Pookie when she was alive needed dentals about every 2 years, but, she was the only one that did. I use an oral spray on all of mine and I brush teeth about 2 times a week. ^_^
 
Hannah was 7 in Dec. She has never had to have her teeth cleaned yet. She has some fatty tumors that we'd take off forsure if her teeth needed cleaning but our Vet dose not want to do that either right now.
My Emily didn't need hers done till she was close to 10~~ we had hers done and she seem to go down hill after wards even though it probably had nothing to do with the teeth cleaning. (I did brush hers quite often before that ) Hannahs ,she has 1/2 of a SAURGENT GREENIES once a week to help clean hers,I did try and brush them 1-2 time a week when she was younger too.. something I never really keep up with and I know I should have.

The bleeding may be a sign of gingivitis like Linda mentioned although it just may be trauma from hard rawhide edges scraping the gums.
 
used to brush their teeth regularly.. but not in about a yr (need to start that up again). I will have to make a vet appt to get her teeth/ gums looked at..

I am just worried because my mom's yorkiepoo had to have 8 teeth pulled in the last 4yrs and I dont want CharlieRose to go through the same thing.
 
Dylan needed his first dental at age 7. He is now 8 and needed five teeth pulled. Your vet should be able to tell if your dog needs a dental.
 
Our groomer brushes ours whenever we go in for a grooming, and the vet checks them every 6 months or so when we go for a "well baby" visit.
