Routine for a new puppy

Oh I forgot. I taught my older dog to ring a bell when he I needs to go out. I have bells hanging from the door and whenever I take them out I ring the bells and say outside. When we are out side I say "go potty". When they go I praise. The puppies I would take out on a leash because you want to see them going potty.
Thank you Nicole for the very helpful advice. It does seem Orijen is a very favoured food to feed. In the uk it is very expensive, so I am now trying to compare feeding charts to get a true price comparison because it is suppose to take less food on the top brands. I have one week to go to make a choice because the one she is on is not great. I will ease her over slowly so I want the new food organised before she gets here. I intend to go to my local pets shop armed with a list and calculator to try and get the best I can afford. P.s the bell is a great idea. It's been about 11 years since we had a puppy in the house, just hope we can make her a healthy happy well adjusted little dog. Let the work begin....:)

Good luck with everything. Good idea to compare all the foods and make your choice. Switching the foods takes about a week or more, gradually is better on their systems. Yes lots of work but puppies learn fast. You will have a happy well adjusted little dog. I also have to say socialization is a must. Amelia went to puppy class and I like to take her shopping. We did the pet expo when she was 7 months. Lots of noise, lots of people many things to see. She did great, I encourage everyone to pet her. She is very good with kids, even though there are no kids in my house.

Look what I just found.... It's a site that rates all the foods gives info on cost per day and compare brands perfect for people looking for foods they can afford. Here it is. http://www.whichdogfood.co.uk/dog-food-directory.php at last now to make a decision ...this could take awhile lol

I am really looking forward to taking Lexi dog everywhere too. I have had dogs that were car sick or car stressed which puts you off taking them in the car. But because there are no kids at home anymore I will enjoy all the grooming and outings with her.

Congratulations and you have been given some good advice. A routine is good and pups need to go after a nap, feeding, playing well all the time it seems :)
One thing I didn't see mentioned in feeding advice tho, keep the pup on whatever it is eating now for awhile. Let it settle in well and then very slowly introduce whatever you intend to feed. Moving to a new home is stressful, you add a new food on top of that and you are asking for trouble.

Good luck

Socializing is very important, BUT before taking her to places where there are a lot of other dogs, check with your vet to make sure that she has all the inoculations/shots that she needs to meet other dogs. I cringe when I see 8 week old puppies ( and yes younger than that too) on the floor at pets stores or at public parks. You never know how well inoculated the other dogs are that have been there before you.

We just had an outbreak of parvo in our area and many dog parks closed down to try and prevent the spread of it.

I agree with DJ. The "rules" about puppies going out changed drastically between the time, and maybe place since we lived in another state, Dylan was a puppy and Farley was a puppy. With Dylan it was a couple of rounds of puppy shots and then we could take him all over. Other than a puppy class (which I highly recommend) with strict puppy plan protocol, I wasn't supposed to take Farley where he would meet other dogs too much. There was a big parvovirus outbreak. I don't know where you live but some things my vet recommended was sitting outside a Starbucks. I would have some treats with me and when people would ask to pet the cute puppy, I would ask them to give him a treat. Also here Home Depot is great. I would put him into the cart and we would go all over the store. Also whenever we would be going through something with a drive through, the bank, the pharmacy, etc. I would put Farley into the car so he could ride and interact.

Thank you for the great tips, yes I think socialising is very important, so I will do my best. Having treats for people to give her is a good tip. She will of had just one injection when I get her and I think her second injection is at 9 or 10 weeks but I will check with the vet. But I think I have to keep her in for a couple of weeks after the last injection. But definitely no contact with dogs until she is clear to do so....
