Chex did the same thing for the first few nights she was home, she howled so loudly my neighbours thought something bad was going on. But thanks to the wonderful advice I've since moved her kennel up to the edge of my bed and covered all but the front door of her kennel and stuck a blanket that Tanz has slept on(and probably drooled on, as he's a drooler in his sleep). She can see when its bed time and will wimper a bit but will settle down, and if its too much Tanz (my 2 year old cocker) will stretch out as far as he possibly can so he has one paw on me and the other in the kennel. She deffently settles down and goes to sleep then. Now the only time she whines is when she needs to go out or if she's knocked her stairs over and can't get up somewhere, but its not the ear splitting howl she came home with.
So just remember, like a new baby, they do grow out of it
